Located on the square of fountains in San Antonio, the Hotel De Portmany, proudly stands at the entrance to the West End Strip of bars and clubs. The Hotel was the very first Hotel to be built in San Antonio in 1933 and it is one of the oldest hotels on the Island. Hotel Espana in Ibiza town was the first Hotel to be opened on the Island, on September 18th 1932. It collapsed not long after. The Montesol is the oldest hotel on the Island still operating today. It opened as the Grand Hotel in June 1933 to be followed by the Buenavista in Santa Eularia in the same year.

In 1933 when the Hotel was built by the Planells family, San Antonio was just a small fishing village and the sea went right up to its doors. Later, land was reclaimed from the sea to build the square and the road that now runs alongside the port. German artist Wilhelm Faber was responsible for the interior design using Cubist, Dada and Expressionist styles. He died in Ibiza in 1987. Today the Hotel De Portmany is home to a Tourist Cafe on its ground floor and the two floors above it seem to be vacant. Sadly, considering its history, it is not trading as a hotel anymore. Interestingly, the First Hotel in San Antonio to open its doors to British package tourists was the Ses Sevines in 1953. The Hotel is still in operation today and can be found close to the Hawaii Hotel and the well known Bay Bar.
