The Ibiza "Hostal"

Hostal La Torre Ibiza
The Spanish word "Hostal" translates as Guest House. Many people mistakenly associate it to the English word "Hostel" which means shared dormitory style budget accommodation popular with students and backpackers. In fact there are no Hostels in Ibiza as they are not licensed to operate.

The Ibiza Hostal, is more like bed and breakfast accommodation owned and managed by a local family. They offer traditional Spanish Hospitality with a more friendly, relaxed and personal touch. Hostals have no more than 20 or 30 rooms decorated in a simple style. That said, they are about the same standard or better, than the 3 star hotels on the Island.

I have found from experience on the forums, that people will avoid booking in a Hostal because they think its dormitory style budget accommodation. In my opinion, I think they offer a more authentic experience as the guest mixes with the local community and their culture rather than a soulless Hotel. The owners can offer expert local knowledge on the best sights, attractions, restaurants and bars to visit.

Another reason to book with a Hostal is the value for money they offer. Prices are cheaper than the main stream hotels because their overheads are much lower and staff are usually family members. Ibicenco hospitality is world renowned and the Hostal is a way to experience this traditional style of local culture for real and at a good price. A top end Hostal in Ibiza is referred to as a Boutique Hostal or agrotourism country hotel.

If booking a Hostal, always check out the reviews on Tripadvisor as like any other Hotel, there are good and bad ones especially in the San An center where they accommodate the young and lively clubber.

HOSTAL RECOMMENDATIONS.

Hostal La Torre

Located at Cap Negret, near Cala Gracio, which is on the outskirts of San Antonio, this locally managed guest house is perched on the side of a cliff overlooking the sunset horizon of the Mediterranean sea. Breathtaking views of sea and sunset on a stunning terrace that oozes Ibicenco simplicity, character and charm. Its owner grew up on the Island and his easy and relaxed style of management reflects the atmosphere of the small and intimate lodgings. Ideal for couples or individuals wanting a peacfull and chilled place to sit back and relax. There is no pool, but the excellent Cala Gracionetta beach is 10mins walk away. La Torre is a little ragged around the edges, and may not offer a polished product but what it lacks in these areas it makes up for in character and stunning natural views of sea and sunset.

Hostal Parque

Located in the Plaza Del Parque, at the foot of the old town in Dalt Villa, this truely authentic Spanish guest house offers accommodation over a bustling and popular local cafe where people gather to meet and people watch over a coffee and pastry. Hostal Parque is located in the middle of a busy thoroughfare where locals come and go from their daily routine. Busy all year round, the Hostal Parque is an ideal base for a city weekend break as its vibrant location is right in the middle of all the action. The La Marina shopping area and bus station are a short walk away along with the world heritage site of Dalt Villa whose renaissance walls overlook the property.

Hostal Salinas

A boutique and trendy upmarket hostal located on the beach of Sallinas. Peace and tranquility are the order of the day here along with a traditional and stylish Ibicenco welcome. The young management team work hard to ensure its guests are well looked after and offer live music, DJ's and other events to attract a more discerning client who would be connected to the clubbing scene. The area around the property is a protected nature reserve with only one road in and out. A little out of the way from all the action this suits many people who like to party by night but want to relax by day on one of the best beaches in the Mediterranean.
